Northern Kingfish

AKA: Northern Whiting Family: Croaker

Northern Kingfish
Water: Salt/Coastal Waters Where: Surf / Inshore
Size: Most common at under a pound. Large fish may reach 2 pounds.
Fight: On lighter gear this fish is a decent fighter.
Deliciousness: Good

Baits: Shrimp / Sandfleas / Squid / Lures Tackle: Spinning / Baitcasting

The Northern Kingfish is characterized by large first doral fin possibly with a long first spine, an elongated head, one barbel on his lower jaw and a sleek body, the lower half is predominately silver with distinct bronzing on the upper half with considerably darker stripes.

These fish are found on mostly sandy bottoms and are numerous in the surf. Also present in channels, cuts and inlets.

Shrimp pieces, cut squid and sand fleas make for the best natural bait, while small jigs and flies are the best srtificial bait.
