Bluefish Specifications


Water: Salt/Coastal Waters Where: Offshore / Surf / Inshore
Size: Most common at 1-3 pounds. Large fish range from 6-8 pounds, with whoppers weighing in as heavy as 20 pounds.
Fight: Very good fighter. Will runs and show some flashy jumps.
Deliciousness: Good When Small And Bled After Caught
Range: Both Coasts Technique: Still Fishing / Casting / Trolling
Baits: Shrimp / Baitfish / Squid / Lures Tackle: Spinning / Baitcasting

The Bluefish is characterized by an almost football shape with blue to greenish upper hafl , fading to a silvery white underside. A darker splotch may be present at the pectoral fin just behind his strong jaw hiding multiple sharp teeth.

These fish are found running along the surf, channels and inlets. With schooling runs occuring in the spring.

Live or dead shrimp, squid, and baitfish make for the best natural baits, while noisy topwater, spoons and jigs worked fast are the best articial baits.
