Black Sea Bass

AKA: Sea Bass / Black Bass / Blackfin / Rockfish / Talywag Family: Grouper

Black Sea Bass
Water: Salt/Coastal Waters Where: Offshore / Inshore
Size: Most common at under a pound, but can reach up to about 4 pounds if a the rare lunker is landed.
Fight: The lighter the tackle the better the fight as this is a smaller fish, but also known as a hard hitter and a decent fight for his size.
Deliciousness: Excellent
Range: Both Coasts Technique: Drifting / Still Fishing / Casting / Trolling
Baits: Shrimp / Baitfish / Crab / Lure Tackle: Spinning / Baitcasting

The Black Sea Bass is characterized by a deep grey to pewter with occasionally browning body with lighter spots, which reverse pattern along his large fan tail. S piked first dorsal blends into a finer fanned second seemlessly. A large mouth and red oval eye make up his front end.

These fish are found in depper areas on the flats all the way to offshore in hard bottomed, or strucured and rocky bottoms.

Live shrimp with dead baifish and cut baits are the best naturla baits, while jigs and plugs make for the best artificial bait.
