Tomtate

AKA: Brown Grunt / Jeniguano / Cuji Family: Grunt

Size: Most common at well under a pound
Fight: Such a small fish that fight is rarely even felt.
Deliciousness: Good Panfish
Range: Both Coasts Technique: Still Fishing
Baits: Shrimp / Baitfish / Squid Tackle: Spinning

The Tomtate is characterized by a silvery body with a yellow stripe running from lips to tail along his flank, at thge tail a darker spot maybe present leading to a more rounded forked tail.

These fish are found alonf patchy or reefed bottoms from inshore to clos shore waters.

Pieces of shrimp or cutbait make for the best natural bait, while ha may occaisionlly hit a jig, artificials are usually not used when targeting Tomtate.
