McBaine, Mo. - A man searching for Indian artifacts with his sons, aged 11 and 6, stumbled upon a find of a lifetime along the gravel bars of the Missouri River this past month. He knew instantly what it was, a Fish hook, but didnt know until closer examination and a few exhillerating seconds that it was actually an ancient bone hook. Bone hooks usually do not last long exposed to the elements and must have been preserved in the silt along the rivers edge. The hook cannot be carbon dated without ruining it, so only an educated guess can be made to as the age of the hook - anywhere from 300 to 1200 yrs old. What sets this bone hook apart is not only its quality, but also its size, It is as large as a mans palm and could be that way because it is infact very old, when the fish in the area targeted were of a size that would dictate such a large hook.
Mustad has an interesting article on ancient hooks that you can view here.

Whoa, if only it were always this easy! |
Three men, fishing for sharks off the coast of Mexico, thought to have perished months ago, were picked up by a Taiwanese ship near the Marshall Islands on August 9th.
They went out of the port of San Blas, in the state of Nayarit, Mexico, and lost power to both of their 200 hp engines on their 25ft boat. Winds and currents quickly swept them out into the Pacific, where they drifted for months without seeing any ships.
They survived on rain water, raw fish & birds. One of the men had a watch that showed the months and days. It is believed that there may have been 5 men originally, but that 2 of them jumped over board early into the ordeal. Those 2 men are believed to have drowned. Most details are sketchy due to the language barrier between the men and their rescuers. The Taiwanese boat that rescued them is scheduled to dock in the Marshall Islands in the next 2 weeks. The Mexican government is most likely arranging transportation for the survivors back to Mexico and their families.

Tim Bone, a trout fisherman from Colorado, got a nice surprise on a father & sons fishing trip recently. They reeled in a 30 ilb., 46.5 in. long northern pike at Stagecoach state park near Steamboat Springs. Bone said it took 20 minutes to reel in and the help of his friends to net the whopper, possibly a state record.
The family said that they plan to mount the pike on their living room wall and talk about it for decades to come. No "The Big One that Got Away" stories in this house.
