Hillsborough County Parks & Recreation Budget Cuts

Richard Worden wrote to CFLFR to say:

Hillsborough County is cutting $140 million from its budget for 2010, this includes closing closing county parks.

E.G. Simmons Park in Ruskin is the only secure ramp on the east side of the bay.

Numerous Guides work out of there everyday making a living. 54 park rangers are being let go, half or all of Parks & Rec Staff.

E.G Simmons has 7 fulltime Rangers that Clean Mow and Maintain the 468 acre park.

Parks & Rec has been under funded and understaffed for years now there making it non exsistent.

This whole thing stinks, on any given weekend day, 150-200 boats launch there.

18th Annual Tampa Tribune Outdoors Exposition Feb. 27 - March 1 2009

Well folks I am back after a long [but much appreciated] winter off. I always love to kick off the season and get into the mood for guiding anglers to Homosassa’s redfish, trout and tarpon with the 18th annual Tampa Tribune Outdoors Exposition hosted each year by Frank Sargeant.

I will be there all day Sunday at Booth 211 of VisitCitrus.com along with Captain Gary Cox of Slapstik Charters and Cindy Deardorff of Riversports Kayaks. It will be hard for me to sit still unless I did not plan on to be there on my own for some of the fishing seminars and exhibits on Friday and Saturday.

Doors open at 1:00pm and admission is free on Friday only courtesy of your southern Chevy Dealers.

The line-up of speakers starts at 1:30pm at the casting pond with DOA's Mark Nichols on using artificial and at 2:00pm on the main stage with Ed Jaworoski talking about changing the face of saltwater fly fishing.

Saturday, February 28 the doors will open at 10:00am. Captain William Toney will be on the main stage talking about Homosassa Fishing 101. Now that will be my favorite to see. I always learn something new from William each time he speaks.

Other favorites are Tampa’s Captain Bill Miller speaking on the main stage on Friday at 3:00pm, and Sarasota’s Captain Rick Grassett on the casting pond at 4:30pm, giving instructions about Saltwater Flyfishing.

My old Tampa buddy who has never missed a Frank Sargeant show is Captain Dave Markett speaking at 7:00pm on Friday on the main stage with the topic of The Old Pro’s Secrets of Finding Trophy Trout and Redfish. Now that sounds like a title of a new book! I hope I can hold up long enough to hear Dave as he will have some interesting, not heard of before, tactics.

The doors will open at 11:00am on Sunday with more seminars and fun things to do for the kids throughout the entire three days. Be sure to bring them as children 12 and under get FREE admission and fishing derbies are scheduled by the Florida Wildlife Conservation Commission.

For the complete listings of guides and stars (too many for me to list) and a map with directions, visit promos.tbo.com/triboutdoorexpo_2009

Ocean Slayer Apparel

Got a chance to check out some shirts from local area company Ocean Slayer and I definitely can recommend them. Their designs are really cool, think tribal tattoo meets Guy Harvey. I think my favorite has to be the Mahi design, but they have a wide variety of local Florida inland and offshore species as well as other non aquatic designs to choose from.

I think what I really dig too is the thought put into what shirts to offer. Sure they have your typical tees, but what a lot of non-angler owned shops usually assume of Florida fishing needs is that's the about all they need to offer. Fact is, long sleeves come in real handy in the late fall through early spring when a morning trip down the river can chill you to the bone as you pilot your boat to the honey hole. As well, I really dig the pocket tees. My favorite fishing shirts always have that breast pocket to temporarily stash hooks, lures, bite weights, whatever as I'm rigging up. Ocean Slayer does not overlook either of these options, which shows their experience as actual anglers helps drive their product choices. They also offer hats, shorts, and clothing for children as well. Of course, lady anglers aren't overlooked as well.

If you like looking good while landing your catch or representing your past time off the water, then check Ocean Slayer out.
