The month of June has seen some good bass fishing action on both Butler Chain and Johns Lake. Johns Lake has been good in the early morning with some good schooling action in the cut, as well as some in mid lake areas where hydrilla is present. Fishing has been really exciting the past few weeks. I have had many guests with a wide variety of skills which makes my trips really fun for me. The Bass are biting and everyone I am taking out is catching fish. My more skilled guests have been catching around 15-20 fish, and my guests that rarely fish, or have never fished are catching about 8-10 fish in 4 hours. With water temperatures steadily rising close to 90° I was surprised to see the big fish bite on the Butler Chain and Lake Toho. I got out 3 times this week and the fishing was good for 2-5 lb. fish. We averaged 10-15 fish per trip. Hayes Mittchell of Jackson, Mississippi caught the largest fish of the week, a 7.5 lunker. With very little rain this week water temperatures steadily rose and slowed down the big fish bite on Butler Chain, Lake Walk in the Water and Lake Toho. Fished the Gambler Tourney today, 210 boats, great crowd. Man was it hot! Not a bad day though. My partner and myself managed 8 fish, best 5 went about 10 pounds. Mouth of the river seemed to be the best spot, with a carolina rigged floating worm. Not near enough to place, but not a horrible day. Very active schooling Bass found almost everywhere. Shad are very plentiful. The water is still pretty clean and clear so keep an eye on the birds as they will tell you when they are over a school of bait. The two patterns that have produced for me are white pearl jerk baits with 1/8th ounce weight. Water levels remain high and daily rain showers are sending run-off from fields and canals into the main lakes and rivers. The mouth of residential canals are producing schooling Bass. Rising water levels have made the canals more accessible. Apopka-Beauclair canal is still producing big Shellcrackers and Bluegill. Also look for bedding panfish around lily pads in coves and canals. Read an article recently in the May 2009 Florida Fishing Weekly that showed these two fellers with two 10+ Bass they caught on JuneBug worms. I drove over there on Sunday, and understand how it got it's name... I mean they could not call it Lake Butt right? Despite all of the rain it was still very shallow. Crappie fishing on Lake Monroe is still HOT!! Captain Joe caught 40 nice Specks up to 2 lb on Pink and Gold Zip jigs and ice jigs in glow pink tipped with minnows tight lining a drift rig . The fish are moving into shallow water to spawn. Captain Lynda caught several fish over 15 inches in front of the Sanford Marina.
