Captain Greg Hood

A friend and I went fishing with Captain Greg Hood of Tarpoons off of Sanibel Island, FL this past week and we were not disappointed! I have been fishing all my life and had the privilege of taking many charters worldwide, but I must say this was one of the best experiences I've had with a guide. When booking our trip the Captain was very communicative, letting me know pick up times and what ...full report

Wow is it really February! The weather in Southwest Florida seems more like late March or April. I don't want to rub it in for you "snow birds" but the daytime temps have remained in the 70's and 80's and it looks like February is going to have more of the same. Boca Grande fishing charters have continued to produce some outstanding Redfish action and I'm starting to catch some ...full report

Sanibel Fishing Report from Tarpoons.com Red rolling moss has taken over many of the fishing spots here around Sanibel and Captiva. Windy conditions for the next few days and tides also move the moss around that likes to choke out our beautiful sea grass and fill in the sand holes. A shortage of bait is fine with me. I like casting artificial lures any way. Top water action is good for trout and ...full report

I've started to slow down a little from this years Tarpon season but I'm still fishing 4-5 days a week and enjoying a great summer. Very good Tarpon fishing off all the barrier islands on the color change and shallow shoals. Lots of Spotted Sea Trout and Redfish in the bushes. Snook catch and release is OK, mostly on the big tides! Spanish Mackerel are just off the beaches. Pilchards will do the trick on all these species. Thight Lines, Capt. This February has been just beautiful. Temperatures in the upper 70's and even 80's have really gotten the fish in the mood to eat. Scaled Sardines, aka White Bait, has begun to show up and the fish are really liking it. I've already enjoyed some 30 plus Snook days and have been catching some really nice ones. The weather this past week has been a little chilly but it's supposed to be gorgeous for at least the next 10 days. With the water temperature steadily increasing the fishing should continue to improve and I'm expecting to start seeing White Bait any time now. I've been staying very, very busy this February and March is even busier. I seem to be getting more and more calls for future dates ...full report

Sanibel Island & Pine Island Sound

Captain Greg Hood

Warmer weather in this weeks forecast for Sanibel Island, water temperatures are key this time of year. I prefer to use artificials, there isn’t much bait anyway, except shrimp. Light tackle and stalking with a push pole is a great way to fish here around Sanibel and Pine Island Sound. With the water temperatures climbing. Ladyfish and Trout have been making their way up the Sound. Later these ...full report

As January came to an end, the weather couldn't have been prettier. A cold front passed through with lows in the upper 30's and 40's followed by beautiful sunshine and temps in the 60's and 70's. The water temperatures have cooled down but should stay relatively the same throughout February. Provided we don't get hit by any really big cold fronts. This being said the fishing ...full report

Fall is HERE! The mornings are nice and cool, and the fish are responding well. This week we did great on the Redfish near Sanibel Island and Fort Myers. They are schooling up and working the flats. Also I'm finding the bigger Snook in the grass more than in the bushes. Offshore the Cobia and Kings are pushed in on the closer wrecks and reefs. Give us a call when your heading into town and we will ...full report

Mahi/Dolphin are in the Islamorada area. We are catching Mahi like crazy. Close to the reef in 300 feet we are killing them now. The 20 knot east wind has pushed the gulf stream and the Dolphin in close. There are also plenty of Blackfin on the hump. January 2010 was arguably one of the coldest months on record. With the jet stream sagging well into Florida we had 10 consecutive days of overnight temperatures below freezing! Those freezing temperatures had a significant effect on the fishing and we will be coping with those effects in the weeks and months to come. This in NO WAY means that the fishing isn't any good!
