 | East Lake Toho, West Lake And Alligator Chain
09/08/09 9:20 PM Tom Welgos | The weather appears to have turned and moved the shallow bite out to the edge of the reeds. Several excellent skinny water anglers I know are finding their favorite haunts barren. The cool breezes over the past few weeks have put the fish into a pre spawn mode. I've had more than a few fish spitting up one inch bait fish and have found a few fat bellied juvenile females. The water has cleared the days are getting shorter and the fish will be feeding up for a cold winter by Florida standards. Carolina rigs, Traps and flukes have been landing most of the fish while frogs and top waters are beginning to wane. (Don't ask me on that one had a hard time getting a consistent frog bite this year). Favorite colors are still the ever productive Watermelon Red, Watermelon Green and June Bug. East Lake Toho has been giving up 12 to 14 lbs limits every Thursday Night except the past two where 8-9 lbs took first.
So heres my prediction for the Fall and Winter hard cold fronts that will consolidate the spawns, (generally these Bass spawn on every full moon from Late September through May or June. I'd cut the opportunity to get one off the bed by 2/3 this year as the cold fronts will leave the freshly fanned beds empty. The Bass on the chains will also opt for deeper water to bed in this year. I have personally located beds in 8' on some of the clearer lakes. The Conway chain that is gin clear usually has bass bedding in 4 to 6' watch that go deeper this year.
