A bottom fishing trip to Pelican Flats gave us a Mahi for the first fish of the day. We arrived at the fishing grounds as the sun was peeking above the horizon, and before setting anchor for a day of bottom fishing, we took a few passes along the lenth of the reef with a varity of offerings in tow. The Mahi took a deep diving plug, and proved the only hit on the passes. we left the line in for another 15 minutes, but she either had no friends along with her, or they were not interested.
The water at the reef was blue, with the Gulfstrem pushing in as far as it was, so we were hoping for some more palegic's to come toward our chum slick during the day. We had quick action on the bottom, with large Triggerfish comming in the boat fairly often. We boated several Red Snapper, up to 19", but sadly none breaking the 20" barrier. A 4 1/2' Cuda was brought up but we left him in the water. We did not catch our first Sea Bass till nearly noon, of any size, but ended up with 5 keepers. The Atlantic Sharpnosed Shark were at the reef, but not as large as they were at 8A recently. The Triggers though were big and fat, and in all we kept about a dozen with the majority between 16" and 19" long. Toward the end of the day as the wind died, and we thought we would also from the heat, we pulled anchor, and drifted over the reef several passes. One spot got us a Lane Snapper on each pass, with the largest at 15". No Cobia, Kings, False Albacore, or other Palegics were seen after the first Mahi in the morning.
Saturday brings another chance to see what will be the catch of the day.
