Seas were forecast to be 2-3, with winds at 5-10. Reality was 3-4 and 10-15, though as the afternoon came things started to calm down. Bottom fishing at Pelican Flats is always very active, and today was no different. Three previous guest from Michigan were with us today, and wanted to catch a lot of fish, and that we did.
Triggerfish were the hot bite of the day with a few dozen large specimins kept, and several legal sized, but smaller ones released. A handful of nice Sea Bass were also kept. Add Lane Snapper, Mutton Snapper, and A Mahogney Snapper to the mix, and two coolers full of fish were brought back to the docks for cleaning. It was what we could not keep that was the low point of the day. Ever since the Red Snapper ban, less than two months ago, we have been catching more and larger specimens each trip. Today we caught 8 that would have been legal, including a brute at 20lbs. Having to release them is disheartening. Then there was the 20lb, 34" Gag Grouper, again having to be released. A few Vermillion Snapper were also among the caught but forced to released fish. Thanks PEW, and your NOAA agency.
Seas are forecast to be great this comming weekend, so another trip is scheduled for Sunday, with sea's forecast at 1-2'. My guess will be more of the same. Perhaps a run out to a few deeper holes will add some AJ's to the mix.......and likely some more ARS's!
