 | Port Canaveral
06/08/10 11:00 AM cadcharters | We left the port at 6:30 saturday 6/5/10 after waiting a short time in line to get the boat in the water due to the tournament. Seas were great at 1 to 2 feet with a light chop and bait pods everywhere on the way out of the Port.
The strategy was simple head east until we hit the Gulf Stream. We ran out at 35 knots. For an hour or so and entered the Gulf Stream where we ran into a great weed line with huge grass mats about 35 miles off shore. We started putting Lines out to troll for Dolphin and Wahoo. We were tolling along passing the only other boat we have seen that morning and giving a friendly wave to the captain and wham! Our 1st strike!
Tyler grabbed the rod and set the hook like a pro his 1st Dolphin was on jumping out of the water and ready for a fight! He fought the fish as we positioned the boat and landed a nice 16 pounder.
We set back up to start getting the lines back out and I noticed a slick in the water. No it wasn’t oil from the Gulf of Mexico. It was a fish slick from feeding fish so we motored over to see what was feeding and if we couldn’t catch whatever it was. This was the most unbelievable and fun site I have ever encountered!
It was a school of Dolphin feeding! We started chucking out small pieces of cut bait to keep them interested and just started dropping lines as fast as we could in the water and the action was crazy! We hooked up on so many fish I lost count. The fish were coming in so fast over the side of the boat I just left the fish box open and as they hit the deck I was measuring them and either throwing the small ones back or kicking them in the box.
We now have 10 keepers and wanting some bigger fish before we limit out. So we set back up on the weed line and headed farther east trolling along the way once we hit the 450 foot of water mark wham! Another strike! I grabbed the rod and saw the fish still chasing the bait so I let out some line and Bamm! A double hookup! Again we positioned the boat as Kurt and I worked the fish in to land them I handed off the rod to Tyler and gaffed Kurt’s fish and then we finished landing the other. Two really nice Bulls!
The day continued as it had previously running into another school of feeding Dolphin bringing 26 fish home and catching somewhere around 80 in all.
