The Good weather (although pretty hot), and flat seas continued on last Thursday. Myself and a single guest headed out for a variety trip, with the goal of catching a few species that he's never caught before. The weedline at 140' was too good to pass up making at least a few runs on, and a Mahi was added, but only after a Cuda was caught while trolling.
Cudas are everywhere from the jetties to the Cones, and in good numbers wherever bait or structure are found. Much like the day before, the structure at 120' held a large number of different fish from AJs, Almacos, Rainbow Runners, Cudas, and lots of bait. The large Cudas had most fish wary, but a few catch's were made. We headed into 8A to bottom fish a bit, and like usual, one can wear themselves out pulling up Sea Bass. We hit a few wrecks on the way back to Port, and Cuda were there also. I decided to have a little fun, and rigged a Cuda-Tube to a 40lb mono leader attached to 20lb braid on a Spinning rod. A pair was hanging around the boat, one at about 5', the other closer to 6'. I was targeting the larger one, but the 5' fish beat it to the bait, and the fight was on. this was still a big fish for fairly light tackle. It took over 20 minutes to wear the fish out enough to take a picture and release it. I offered this fight to my guest, but he opted to watch me do battle. This was a solid 50lb plus fish, perhaps closer to 60lbs. A good way to end the day. Back to Port to beat the storms and clean some fish.
