Joe Porcelli | Fish are feeding both on the moon and tide change. That is if you are in an area that has tide moving the water. This week on the new moon the water came up a foot or so in the lagoon, equals more playing field. I had Norbert Dean and his children (Theresa, Danielle, and Nick) out for a half day and they got to catch many fish. They caught a Redfish in the first few minutes of fishing then it rained for just a bit. That did not dampen our spirits and we caught many more fish through out the morning. The Trout fishing was on. This is my favorite type of trips to have, when I have a family making memories together and enjoying life. You can also find many other fish in the lagoon this time of year, White Baits and finger Mullet brought Jacks and Ladyfish. Ladyfish and Mullet bring the Tarpon, Sharks and other critters. The Ladyfish are so thick busting finger Mullet that are skyrocketing it sounds like a waterfall, this is more than just a shower LOL. The Reds are bunched up in schools getting ready for their spawn. If you want to catch some really nice Redfish in tight schools this is a great time to do it. The other day I saw a big Shark bust a bait in shallow water with dorsal fin exposed. After the meal it headed for deeper water just off Georges bar. Then on Tiger shoal on Friday Tammy pointed out a what’s that? It was a Hammerhead cruising Tiger shoal.
The 3” Gulp shrimp in natural color is getting most of our Redfish bites. A good cast is always the beginning of something good to happen. A bad cast is not. To make a good cast you need to have good tackle rod, reel and good line. For my flats fishing I use FireLine in some applications and Spider wire for others depending on the color of the water or weight of lure tossed. My reels I use are Abu Garcia Soron STX 20 and STX 40 and it dose make a difference. I have very few if any line hang-ups on my drag nut. Sorons nut design makes the line slip over the nut so it won’t hang up. I can’t have a reel or line bunch up on a reel as my client is trying to make that good cast.
Tim and Tammy Bailey joined me two days ago and they were rewarded for casting very well. Many double headers were achiever and they couldn’t believe what a school of 150+ Redfish looks like from only feet away. Many smiles and learning experience always makes for a perfect day.
