Great weather make for a Great Fishing Day......Just not as good as a catching day. Warm water below and above must have had an impact on the overall bite. Though some have still found action, most have noticed the slowdown. We headed for 125' of water where we had been getting AJs regularly, and more recently Vermillion Snapper, along with the usual abundance of Red Snapper. This trip we found fish marking, but very stubborn about eating. The only thing eager to take whatever we put in the water, live or artificial was Shark and Cuda.
After some time of little success, we took a ride to the 20 mile weather buoy. A lot of bait there had us at least a little hopeful that something nice may be around. Only more Shark and Cuda were caught however, but we made the best of it, catching them on various tackle. We did a few large circle's and pass by's while dragging baits, hoping for something else to bite, but only more of the same.
Off to 8A we went. We knew we could catch more than Cuda and Shark there, though they were there also. A lot of undersized Sea Bass were found, with the bait being hit on the way down most of the time. More Shark and Cuda. Then, a nice visitor arrived at the boat, well nice at first. After about 20 minutes of hanging around the boat (just out of gaff range!) a 40lb plus Cobia finally wandered off. This was not until we offered it about everything we had in the boat. We were already flatlining livies when it showed up, but she turned her nose up at them, only making slow pass's by them for a look. Cobia jigs, artificial eel's, cut bait, and even some small Sea Bass were left in the water on their way up , but all with the same results......a look and nod and a "No Thanks". We did try however. Next time I will likely have gear I can take to the water with that will virtually ensure hitting the target!
As we were nearing the end of our day, on the eastern side of 8A, we spotted what was reported to the Coast Guard earlier in the week. This Browish-Rust colored substance was suspended about 10' below the surface, and when a weight was dropped down to it, disappeared in a matter of a few inches from sight. This mass as tightly held together, a fairly large, covering several acres.
Back to the docks at Fishermans World to clean fish we went. We did not catch the fish we wanted, but we did not get skunked either, so all in all it was a good day fishing, after all, we we could have been Working!
