Hernando Beach Fishing Report

Fishing continues to be very productive in our back country and near shore flats. Red fish are taking over the back country areas, look around the outside points, oyster bars, rocky islands, and mangrove shore lines that are holding mullet schools and lots of bait. Top water lures are working first thing in the morning, the skitter walk sw08 in the mullet and chartreuse colors are doing the trick. Live bait is still the best way to go pin fish and green backs rig with a 3/0 circle hook will get bit, I like to cut the tail end off of the bait fish doing this the bait can not swim into the grass it will flutter around causing nurvous action and the sent will go through out the water making red fish to chew. Size of the schools have been 25 to 60 fish in each school and just about every one are in the upper slot and way over 26 to 34".

Trout are still in the deeper flats west of Hernando 8 to 12 feet on spotty bottom, a 1/4 ounce jig head and a white or new penny gulp shrimp will get the job done. In the same area big sea bass and sharks are all over the place. I have got a few reports of mackerel hanging out in the 15 to 20 feet range live green backs will get hit quickly out there make sure you use a long shark hook and a heave leader for them.

Scallop season end on the 25Th of September, this season has been very good in 6 to 8 feet of water North of Bay port. Stop into Precision Tackle for the NEW C-Eyes Mirr O Dines they are working great on red fish, snook, and trout. Book a trip fishing and scalloping is off the hook.
