Ocean Slayer ApparelGot a chance to check out some shirts from local area company Ocean Slayer and I definitely can recommend them. Their designs are really cool, think tribal tattoo meets Guy Harvey. I think my favorite has to be the Mahi design, but they have a wide variety of local Florida inland and offshore species as well as other non aquatic designs to choose from.
I think what I really dig too is the thought put into what shirts to offer. Sure they have your typical tees, but what a lot of non-angler owned shops usually assume of Florida fishing needs is that's the about all they need to offer. Fact is, long sleeves come in real handy in the late fall through early spring when a morning trip down the river can chill you to the bone as you pilot your boat to the honey hole. As well, I really dig the pocket tees. My favorite fishing shirts always have that breast pocket to temporarily stash hooks, lures, bite weights, whatever as I'm rigging up. Ocean Slayer does not overlook either of these options, which shows their experience as actual anglers helps drive their product choices. They also offer hats, shorts, and clothing for children as well. Of course, lady anglers aren't overlooked as well.
If you like looking good while landing your catch or representing your past time off the water, then check Ocean Slayer out.

Classic Tournaments is pleased to announce the 2008 Flatsmasters Tournament Series Schedule.
The Flatsmasters is the largest backcountry tournament series in Florida with over 1500 anglers participating in the 2007 events. The Flatsmasters is unique as it is the only major televised series to target a different combination of species (Trout,Redfish,Snook) in each event. The Flatsmasters consists of 2 artificial lure only events and 2 open bait events. The Top Fifty teams in points are invited to fish The Flatsmasters Championship in October.
The Flatsmasters is also the only major TV Tournament to allow wading, so all the action is up close as many teams are in the water with the fish. The Flatsmasters can be seen on The SunSports TV Network across Florida on Cable and nationally on satellite. New teams wanting to participate in the 2008 Flatsmasters Series must first fish the Flatsmasters Qualifier Event in February. The top 15 teams from The Qualifier are invited to compete in the 2008 Flatsmasters. Visit www.flatsmasters.com for more information. |
INdustry In TroubleHappy Thanksgiving to everyone, you are all probably aware from reading the papers that the fishing industry is in serious trouble, boats sales are off 15%, big box fishing retailers are reporting bad earnings, they are buying up smaller retailers and controlling what you can buy, many retailers are dropping manufacturer SKU's, or knocking off their vendor products and having them made in China.
A recent casualty was the company DOA lures, they found that one of their distributors was knocking off their product in China and offering the product for about 1/2 the cost of an original DOA, this happens all the time. Now DOA is looking to manufacture in China so they can compete with their own knocked off product, crazy.
This is a very serious problem that threatens all manufacturers. If you love fishing do what you can to support the manufacturer first, and not the retailer. Retailers care about the bottom line, selling lower quality products at high prices, that means off shore manufacturing. Without the manufacturer taking the risks, there would be no sport fishing industry. Do research online to find manufacturers that make the product you need, deal with them before you shop at the retailer, they do not have everything that is available, just what they think you need. Support the industry, support your manufacturers.
Editor's Note: post edited for spelling and removed a commercial link. 100% agree with the sentiment, support the local and national fishing industry!
