Went out to go kayak fishing in the no motor zone just north of Port Canaveral with Capt. Don today and let me tell you, that was awesome. I've never stepped into a kayak before, but I had no trouble getting the hang of it. After a bit I was starting to see the maneuverability advantages that kayaks have over canoe for no motor fishing. We were hooking into trouts all day and I got an especially nice gator trout that could have been 4 lbs easy. Saw plenty of reds too, Don pulled in a nice one, check out the props board. If anyone is considering checking out kayak give it a try! The quiet basic nature of it really lets you focus on your fishing.

Took the boys out that same way this weekend, Justin and myself in my mohawk canoe and Mike took a small kayak (nothing like those great heritage ones you have). We had a blast! Mike said exactly the same thing you did, it was more like hunting, paddling around or drifting with the bait fish. The giant red and cat those guys caught was evidence enough! I got a few trout myself.

Great catch. Did he catch the red on the same rigs we were using?

Hey, I know I answered you offline, but for the benefit of others, Justin was using Berkely peeler crabs on the end of the Cajun Thunder popping cork rigs. Since that time I have seen a lot of attention being given to the popping cork on the flats, especially at the recent boat and fishing show.

By the way, give Google a search for: central florida kayak fishing
The article I wrote for Metroblogging Orlando about fishing the no motor zone with you is currently at #4 and I think this site is right behind that, pretty cool!

Hello Chris and welcome to the site,

A few thoughts about selecting the right Kayak for your fishing needs. Starting with the basics, what you will be looking for is a Sit-on-top variety of kayak (its just a better design for fishing than a sit in), Of course make sure its large enough for your body type and sits pretty high out of the water, for a nice dry ride but not too high as to make it unstable. The width is also a big factor in this and also correlates to what type of paddling you will be doing, The longer and narrower the yak is the faster it will be and meant for longer straight runs, the shorter and wider will be more stable and allow you maneuver quite a bit better for the rivers or winding streams. A few things to look for when deciding between brands is amount of storage for your gear and fish, plenty of surface space and hooks/eyelets for adding your rocket launcher and rod holders, and of course the ever important space for a cooler to fill with your favorite beverage of adult nature. I would recommended going out to the store (alot of which will let you take a test paddle on many different brands) and see what is going to work for you and for what you want to do with it. IF i can dig up a capt or someone to write a more definitive and expert answer, I will post a new article on the site about it, this is the sort of information that allot of people would most likely find handy. SO keep us posted on your end of the process as well.

Have a goodin!

Thats a very nice Yak Chris, sure beats the heck outta my lowball Mainstream Kayak. I also have a 16 foot Mohawk Canoe for use out there too. (you should snap some pics and post them up, is there any additions or plans for such on that bad boy?)

The No Motor Zone is located over the draw bridge, past the cruise ship terminals and just before grouper road on the northern side of Port Canaveral. If you follow the signs to Carnival cruise ports and go past them, you are on the right road. Just before the Trident sub pier entrance (grouper road), on your left, there will be a clearing of the brush. That is the entrance / drop point for hitting the NMZ (there is limited parking there). Huge reds, gator trout, sailcat and other species stack up in there. Its a great place to fish. Try using a white or pink berkley jerk shad under a popping cork.

I, personally, do not get out there as much as I like. Maybe only a couple times a year. We have talked about getting a group or a club together, or even holding a small scale event out there, but nothing has come to fruition just yet.

If you are heading out there, or want to try and form a group, just let me know, I know of several other people who have expressed interest in this as well.

If you would like to see a map, check this page out, it near the bottom on the right side:

Brevard County Fishing Spots

all florida fishing spots we have listed should now be accompanied by a map. Its just one of many new exciting things we have planned for CFLFR. Look for alot of changes..some big and some small coming this year. there is alot of them heading down the pike.. not at liberty to tell you about all of them just yet, but keep checkin back in for more details.

If you go down the 528 like you are heading to the cruise terminals and take that right exit before you pass the boats, it will loop around and run back north so that you pass to the west side of where the big boats dock. That road will curve to the east and just keep your eyes peeled on your left hand side for a well worn truck path that cuts into the tall brush. It slopes down real steep, so it can be hard to see if you aren't looking real close. If you reach the military base, you've gone too far, turn around and head back and look again. You can drive right down to the water, park and launch right from there. The whole area is a nice grassy flat with a lot of sandy pot holes. I ALWAYS see reds close to that shoreline along the base. Just hop in the water and paddle diagonally towards that building on the shore towards the right hand side. You can also hook up with trout pretty much anywhere in there.

I try to go as often as life will let me, which is maybe once a month. Next time I have solid plans I'll post them and maybe we can get a meet up going.
